Here's what a year of writing looks like:
10 notebooks, 3/4 of a bottle of Noodler's ink and approximately 400,000 words (250/page, 160 pages a notebook, 10 notebooks).
I bought a Lamy Safari fountain pen
early in the year and was curious how long it would last. (And no, I did not buy it just because it's called "Safari." OK so maybe I did a little.) I love writing with it, though I have become very sensitive to the type of paper I'm writing on. Not all notebooks are the same - even though I'm only writing on cheap spiral notebook pages. Some pages are "thirstier" than others, making me constantly aware of the nib on the page. I don't know that I mind, though. I've always loved that montage in Shakespeare in Love that shows him frantically putting down words - dipping the pen, sharpening the nib. It's like an artist preparing the canvas before he paints. I'm OK with stories feeling like they're handmade.
I have no plans to speed up or slow down. The plan is always 3 pages a day of fiction, essays, blog posts, thinking, dreaming and complaining. Every day. And so far, 2013 is shaping up to be the same.
