Over the weekend we got up early and drove in the dark to a dance competition.
A little sad, this one was. It's our daughter and her best friend and the best friend is a senior this year. Which means the days of dance competitions and duets are almost over.
They did really really well, earning a Double Platinum ranking on their duet - which is the highest you could get at this competition. Something they've never achieved before.
I love watching them dance. They're so in sync. When you see still photos of them, their arms and legs are almost always in the exact same spot. Even on turns.
I like to think that you can only dance that way when you know each other's secrets. That what we see on stage happens because of what they are off stage. They've known each other for 12 years. They've danced together almost as long - long enough that it seems that their friendship is all tied up with dance. That it IS its own dance.
When I watch them, I see all these photos put together into one. The layers of years. The then and the now all smooshed together.
And man, it's hard to watch it end.
